Overview

These are trees grown out from seed collected from Zard, a late blooming yellow fleshed apricot from Iran and perhaps Luke's all time favorite.

Visit the Zard product page for more info on the parent tree from which these seedlings were grown.

Why grow Zard Seedlings?

Planting a seed does not reproduce a cultivar identically—each seedling is a new genotype. But in apricot, seedling populations are widely used as a practical way to discover late-blooming, high-quality trees and to broaden genetic diversity, including in regions where spring frost is the primary limiting factor. A large Iranian study explicitly selected late-blooming, high fruit-quality genotypes among 278 seedling-originated trees, demonstrating that seedling populations are a valid improvement pathway in apricot.

Why apricot seedlings can be “closer to the mother tree” than apple seedlings

The key difference isn’t that apricot is “less heterozygous” (meaning genetically mixed from two parents), but that their mating systems differ in ways that change what you should expect from seeds.

Apple varieties generally need pollen from a different tree to produce fruit because apples have a genetic system that blocks most self-fertilization (called S-RNase–based self-incompatibility). As a result, apple seeds almost always come from cross-pollination, which leads to highly mixed genetics across cultivars.

Apricot also has a genetic system that can prevent self-fertilization, but many modern apricot varieties are self-fertile (often linked to the Sᶜ allele), meaning a single tree can still set fruit on its own. This varies by variety, but large surveys show self-fertility is common in cultivated apricot.

So in an open-pollinated seed lot from a self-fertile apricot, you can get a mix of:

  • selfed seedlings (seed parent = pollen parent)

  • outcrossed seedlings (pollen from another tree)

Selfing increases the chance that seedlings share more genes with the mother tree than in crops that must always cross-pollinate. This is basic genetics, and it’s why apricot seedlings can sometimes show more “family resemblance” than apple seedlings — without anything being guaranteed.

I think this is one reason apricot seedlings are often more horticulturally usable than apple seedlings, even though every seed is still its own genetic individual.

Why Zard is especially interesting as seed parent material

Breeding literature repeatedly highlights Central Asian / Iran-Caucasian apricot genetics for fruit quality and kernel traits, and documents how seedling populations helped form regional landraces. There's also been some research that introducing Central Asian genetics into breeding programs increases diversity and can produce meaningful gains in fruit quality, including higher Brix, within just a few generations.

Zard checks many of the key boxes for breeding apricots suited to cold climates: a high chilling requirement, late bloom, strong mid-winter hardiness (roughly down to –40°F), excellent flavor, and edible kernels.

Open-pollinated seedlings: what’s known and what isn’t

Certain: open-pollinated seedlings always have an unknown pollen parent. Even when the mother tree is self-fertile, cross-pollination can still happen, so a seed lot may contain both selfed and crossed seedlings.

Unknown without DNA testing: exactly which trees provided pollen, and how many seedlings came from selfing versus crossing.

The mother Zard tree was surrounded mainly by Prairie Province apricots (Westcot, Morden 604, Brookcot, Debbie’s Gold, Sunrise). Therefore, if crossing occurred, there is a good chance that those nearby trees were among the pollen donors. Still, this remains an inference unless confirmed by genetic testing.

Why these traits matter for cold-climate breeding

Across the literature, breeding priorities are consistent:

  • Later bloom to reduce spring frost risk

  • High fruit quality (including sugars / Brix)

  • Kernel traits, including edible kernels

These traits are repeatedly identified as valuable within Central and Inner Asian apricot genetics.

In other words, a seed parent reported to combine late bloom tendencies, excellent flavor, and edible kernels makes scientific sense as breeding material,  even though no single seedling is guaranteed to inherit everything.

And I’ll add this from direct experience: this is the first population of Zard seedlings we’ve grown in Montana, so much more time will be needed to understand how these genetics express themselves here. What we’re offering isn’t a finished product — it’s living genetic material. Part of the value is in observing, selecting, and learning over years.

Not a huge fan of this
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
The pump bottle doesn't work, which isn't great but is also not a deal breaker. You can twist off the cap and get the product out that way. I may have just gotten a defective bottle, who knows? The sunscreen itself has a really nice texture like others have said and it goes on smoothly with no cast. But it also smells strongly like incense; several very fragrant plant ingredients at play here even though it has no artificial fragrances. Rosemary, some kind of australian pepper plant, and other strong smelling ingredients. If strong smells bother you, you might not like this one. I really don't like this smell. It made my skin red and itchy too, unfortunately. Not something I can really use :( Love what the company is doing with the clean ingredients, though. Lots of pros and cons here and I'd definitely recommend trying it out even though it wasn't my cup of tea. Getting the small sample size to start with was the right move!

I Look Forward to Using it Daily
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I've used this for at least four years and it's my favorite daily defense sunscreen. I notice some people had reactions but I have sensitive skin and rosacea and am have no irritation from this product. But everyone is different ... It goes on with a hardly noticeable hint of white then is quickly absorbed. Almost seems to even out my pigmentation a little. For those who mentioned it's dry, I don't expect this to be a moisturizer and use it on top of a treatment from the dermatologist. It smells fresh but isn't strongly scented. I've also tried Elta MD and it's a good product but this is less expensive for more product. The pump is handy until it can't reach and it becomes necessary to take the lid off and tap the remaining product into your palm each day. There's a good week or so left when the pump comes up empty. Hope you have as good of luck as I have. Some mention oiliness and piling but that hasn't been the case, but I order from the manufacturer directly which may insure I get the freshest batch.

Quick and easy to apply, plus NO white cast on brown skin!
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Admittedly, I don't normally wear sunscreen (maybe for a rare day at the beach, but certainly not on a daily basis). However, upon getting my first tattoo, I learned that the sun is a tattoo's mortal enemy, so I did a ton of research on sunscreens to find a good brand that would be effective in preventing the premature fading of my ink (gotta protect my investment, y'know?). Many people recommend mineral sunscreen instead of chemical for tattoos, and since I'm Black / brown / African American, my main concern was choosing a product that wouldn't leave a white cast. After reading the reviews of countless products, I finally settled on trying Thrive (the SPF 30 Face Sunscreen), and after two months of using this product, I can confidently say I hit the jackpot on the first try. The consistency of this sunscreen is creamy (similar to that of a standard lotion), so it spreads very easily and is "absorbed" into/onto the skin within seconds. And the best part is, there is absolutely NO white cast -- I've attached photos of both my tattooed and non-tattooed forearms post-sunscreen application for reference. You can see that there a little shine on my tattoo (which I actually like), but otherwise no discoloration from the product. In hindsight I probably should have taken before-and-after photos for both arms, but just take my word for it: there's seriously no cast. Also, the product has a slight smell (kind of citrusy, like grapefruit), but it's not strong nor unpleasant and it doesn't linger. After being rubbed in, the product feels a little sticky as it dries, but it dries pretty quickly and then leaves the skin feeling smooth/normal. The only semi-con I have is that after applying and reapplying multiple times in a single day (like 3+ times), I've noticed some slight white flakiness (I'm thinking this is just product build-up, since the minerals in this sunscreen sit on top of your skin as opposed to being fully absorbed). However, this is not really a big deal to me, as the flakes can be wiped away, but if it were really noticeable or if I knew I would need to continue reapplying that day, I could probably just wash my arm off real quick with some soap and water, then dry and reapply to resolve the problem. As a final note, I'm not actually sure if this sunscreen is effective in providing sun protection. I don't get sunburnt, so I don't really have any way of knowing whether this product is fulfilling its intended purpose (I guess time will tell; for now I'll just keep an eye out for my ink fading). But assuming it is in fact working, I 100% recommend this product!

Amazing Pimple Patches - Actually Work!
Size: 36 Count (Pack of 1)
Effectiveness: These Mighty Patch Original hydrocolloid patches have been absolutely incredible for treating breakouts quickly and effectively without harsh chemicals or painful extraction. The patches work remarkably well overnight, drawing out impurities and reducing the size and inflammation of pimples by morning. I love how they protect blemishes from picking and touching, which prevents further irritation and scarring. The clear design makes them virtually invisible during wear, so I can use them during the day without feeling self-conscious. The patches stick securely without being painful to remove, and they genuinely speed up the healing process compared to leaving breakouts untreated. Quality: Hero Cosmetics has created an exceptional product with these hydrocolloid patches that clearly demonstrates superior manufacturing quality. The adhesive is perfectly balanced - strong enough to stay in place through sleep and daily activities but gentle enough to remove without skin irritation. The hydrocolloid material is high-grade and effectively draws out fluid and impurities without over-drying the surrounding skin. The patches maintain their integrity throughout wear and don't fall apart or lose effectiveness. The sterile packaging ensures product safety and hygiene, which is essential for treating open or inflamed skin. Value for Money: These pimple patches provide outstanding value when you consider how effectively they treat breakouts while preventing scarring and further damage from picking. The cost per patch is reasonable considering the dramatic results they deliver, often clearing blemishes faster than expensive acne treatments. The prevention of scarring alone makes these worth far more than their price, as treating acne scars is much more expensive and time-consuming than preventing them. The convenience and effectiveness make these far more cost-effective than multiple skincare products or dermatologist visits for individual breakouts. These patches have become essential in my skincare routine and consistently deliver impressive results. Highly recommend for anyone dealing with occasional or persistent breakouts who wants fast, effective treatment!

The best patches!
Size: 36 Count (Pack of 1)
These work amazingly well! I just stick one on before bed and by morning the pimple is noticeably flatter and less red. It really does what it says without any picking or irritation. They stay on all night even if I toss and turn, which I was surprised by, and they don’t feel uncomfortable at all while sleeping. I also like that they’re thin and kind of blend into the skin, so you don’t really notice them if you wear them during the day either. Super simple, effective, and way less stressful than dealing with breakouts the usual way. They fit well and the size is great, really absorbs all the yuck from a pimple. A great value for money!
